Back to School

Madison holds a special place in my heart. I spent my college years growing up here, learning about myself and enjoying life before adulthood. "Adulting" is all too real now, so sometimes you have to escape back to the simpler days.

Over Labor Day weekend, Neil and I took a drive to spend the day exploring Madison in a new way. Instead of the usual agenda where we would meet up with old friends and revisit old stomping grounds, we made it a selfish weekend and spent time enjoying each other's company.

For those that have never been to Madison and even for those that have, I've noted my top spots to hit for any great weekend in Madison. These go beyond the usual places and even take a little driving, but they are all worth a visit.

New Glarus Brewing- head outside of Madison about half an hour to explore the home of Spotted Cow. And if you don't know what Spotted Cow is, that's even more reason to go. Take yourself on a tour and enjoy that Spotted Cow in the beer garden.

Cow & Quince- a quaint little restaurant in the town of New Glarus that makes the perfect stop for a bite to eat. With a wide variety of options on their menu, there is something for everyone and the staff is incredibly friendly. Maybe it's that small town charm.

Wisconsin Brewing Co.- located about twenty minutes outside downtown Madison, this brewery lives and breathes Wisconsin. From their ingredients to their equipment, this local establishment keeps business at home, serving up great beer with plenty of space to enjoy it. You might even get lucky and catch some live music.

Octopi Brewing- home to brands like Untitled Art, Octopi Brewing, The Giving Brewery, and Dachs, this spot is one of my favorites. From sours and ciders to stouts and ales, this brewery pulls all the stops. Serving food Wednesday through Saturday, chef Jacob Guyette makes his food truck grub to pair with the brewers creations.

Canteen- some of the best Mexican food I've had in Wisconsin. You don't go here for those Taco Bell bean burritos, you go for unique creations that make it impossible to pick just one item off the menu. In the summertime, pick up a Concerts 4-Pack for Concerts on the Square and when dining in, I highly recommend a frozen margarita and the Sweet Potato Dorados.

Wildwood Cafe- I wish I could pick up this cafe and bring it to Milwaukee. This family owned and operated business is the definition of perfection. Every detail is so well thought out, except the number of tables, but I mean that in the best way possible. They are a Stoughton favorite and rightfully so. Go early to grab a spot and post up with your computer or a good book.

    1. I have family from Chicago and spent a year there for school- I absolutely love it! If you ever need a Wisco rec, let me know! Milwaukee is a hidden gem that so many people over look.
